Position Summary
The Director of Sales is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and oversight of sales initiatives designed to increase overnight visitation, group business, and visitor spending within the Denton community. This position leads destination sales efforts for meetings, conventions, sporting events, group travel, festivals, and other tourism-related opportunities that generate economic impact for local hospitality and tourism partners.
As part of a Destination Management & Marketing Organization (DMMO), this position supports the organization’s mission through destination sales leadership, partner engagement, relationship management, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen Denton’s
visitor economy and destination brand.

Duties & Responsibilities
Strategic Sales & Business Development
Develop and implement short-term and long-term sales strategies aligned with organizational goals and
destination priorities.
Identify, solicit, and secure convention, meeting, sports, group tour, and special event business that generates overnight stays and economic impact.
Establish annual sales goals, booking pace objectives, and performance metrics.
Conduct direct sales activities including prospecting, lead generation, client presentations, trade show
participation, sales missions, and site inspections.
Develop and maintain relationships with meeting planners, rights holders, event organizers, tour
operators, and industry professionals.
Destination & Partner Relations
Serve as a liaison between clients and local hospitality and tourism stakeholders including hotels, venues, attractions, restaurants, universities, and community organizations.
Foster collaborative relationships within the hospitality community to support destination development and visitor experience initiatives.
Represent Discover Denton at industry events, networking functions, conferences, and community
meetings.
Promote Denton as a destination through strategic partnerships, relationship management, and community engagement.
Department Operations & Administration
Oversee daily sales operations including CRM management, lead distribution, account management,
reporting, and booking activity.
Monitor room night production, sales activity, economic impact metrics, and department performance.
Prepare reports, presentations, forecasts, and supporting documentation for organizational leadership,
board meetings, and stakeholders.
Research and evaluate industry trends, market opportunities, and emerging sales strategies to enhance
organizational effectiveness.
Leadership & Staff Development
Supervise, mentor, train, and evaluate assigned staff.
Promote a collaborative and professional team environment focused on accountability, innovation, and
customer service.
Support professional development and ongoing training opportunities for staff.
Budget & Fiscal Responsibility
Assist in the development, management, and monitoring of departmental budgets and sales initiatives.
Ensure responsible stewardship of organizational resources and accurate reporting of expenditures and
activities.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in hospitality, Tourism, Marketing, Business Administration, Communications, or a
related field preferred.
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in destination sales, hotel sales, convention services, tourism,
hospitality, sports marketing, or a related field.
Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of destination marketing and management principles, hospitality industry practices, and
tourism sales strategies.
Knowledge of convention, meeting, sports, and group travel sales processes and client development.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with clients, stakeholders, hospitality
partners, and community leaders.
Strong communication, presentation, negotiation, and public speaking skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and projects in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to analyze data, interpret reports, and monitor performance metrics.
Proficiency in CRM systems, Microsoft Office applications, and related sales technology platforms.
Ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Work is performed primarily in an office environment with regular attendance at off-site meetings, events, and industry functions.
Frequent local, regional, and national travel may be required.
Evening, holidays, and weekend work may be required based on organizational events and industry
activities.
Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, computer use, and presentations may be required.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel as required.
